New for 2006, BMX Big Air is coming to X Games 12, see it LIVE only Pay Per View
Mat Hoffman pioneered the big ramp era when he built the first big quarterpipe in the spring of 1992. He went 23’ above a 21’ tall quarter pipe, more than doubling any previous highest air. In the spring of 2001 he set a new record high air at 26.5 feet and is officially recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the “Highest BMX Vert Air”.
In Dec. 21, 2000, Colin Winkelman sets World record longest BMX jump record at 116 ft.
Put these two ramps together and you have the Mega Ramp and BMX Big Air.
In early 2003 Allen Cooke set the longest back flip record at 54’.
Last year at the X Games Mike Escamilla set a new back flip record at 62’.
Dave Mirra and Kevin Robinson have both come very close to the 20’ mark on the quarterpipe, and John Parker has blasted some huge airs on a big quarter before also.
Early in 2006 Chad Kagy opened the door to what a BMX rider can do on the Mega ramp. Flip whips and 21’ on the quarter.
This is going to be absolutely nuts, don’t miss out on BMX history LIVE!!!
Invite Riders:
Chad Kagy
Dave Mirra
Kevin Robinson
Allen Cooke
Ryan Nyquist
Alternates:
Ryan Guettler
Morgan Wade

A double flair may sound simple, but X Games 12 Men's BMX Freestyle Vert Best Trick gold medal-winner Kevin Robinson can assure everybody that its not. Robinson's double flair (a back flip into a cork screw) earned him the X Games gold medal that has eluded him until tonight, when he beat out silver medalist Chad Kagy and bronze medalist Simon Tabron. Fittingly the three-time BMX Freestyle Vert bronze medalist earned gold by landing a trick he's been chasing for years. "This was three years in the making - it's the end of a three-year-long day," said Robinson. "I took off and it felt light the whole way through until I hit bottom." Kagy, who earlier in the evening won gold in the BMX Freestyle Vert, tallied a second X Games 12 medal by landing a double tail whip flat spin. Tabron grabbed his second X Games 12 bronze medal with an Alley Oop No-Hand to Turn Down 540. Earlier in the evening Tabron won bronze in the BMX Freestyle Vert. "I'm happy to get third in the middle of all this mayhem," said Tabron. "The best thing is that everyone came up healthy. History was made tonight, and there were no casualties."

LOS ANGELES - August 2006 - For the first time in nine years, the BMX Freestyle Vert medal podium is owned by someone not named Mirra or Bestwick. Chad Kagy edged fellow BMX legends Jamie Bestwick and Simon Tabron to take his first gold in BMX Freestyle Vert. The State College, Pa. BMX superstar electrified the STAPLES Center crowd with a run that topped stiff competition and was punctuated by a flat-spin bar spin flair, the first time the signature trick had been landed in competition. "All the pieces came together," said Kagy. "It was the right time and the right place. It definitely puts a huge smile on my face. I rode to the very best of my ability." Kagy's run also included a flat-spin tail whip and a superman seat grab flair. Fans will see more of the 27-year-old at X Games 12, as he will compete later this evening in BMX Freestyle Vert Best Trick and will also compete in BMX Big Air, new to X Games 12.
Bestwick, the defending gold medalist and five-time X Games Vert medalist, kept the pressure on Kagy. After the competition, Bestwick waxed nostalgic about being a part of the growth of BMX Vert and the X Games. "It was awesome. I had a lot of fun doing it," Bestwick said. "I'm proud to look back and say I was a part of it." The English rider, that some consider the greatest BMX Vert, put together a dynamic first run that included an alley-oop 540, superman Indian and a regular to switch tail whip. He will also compete again this evening in the BMX Freestyle Vert Best Trick competition.
Tabron, who took home the silver in BMX Vert at X Games 10 but missed X games 11 due to injury, used every feature of the ramp during the competition, and had runs characterized by big transitions and smooth landings. He landed a clean 900, a no-hands alley-oop and a turn-down 540. Tabron has finished in the top five in every X Games Vert competition he has entered since 1998. "I loved the ramp design. It wasn't working for me during practice, but it came together for me during my runs."
