Je ne sais pas si vous en avez parlé auparavant (je ne l'ai pas vu), mais dans le Ride US de juillet, il y a un petit hommage de Jeff Zielenski (Rédacteur et photographe du magazine) à 23 Mag. Je cite:

"23mag.com - enough BMX history to make your eyes bleed from staring at the computer screen for too long."

En gros pour ceux qui ne parlent pas Anglais, "23mag: Assez d'info sur l'histoire du BMX pour rendre vos yeux tout rouge à force de rester collé à l'écran."

Name/age/hometown/place of residence/years riding? My name is Eric Rothenbusch. I live in Valence, France. I’m 30 years old, I like bmx and I’ve been riding every single week since 1987.

It looks like 23mag was actually a print magazine for a while. When and where did the idea for 23mag come along? How many issues did you put out and why did you make the switch to a Web site? At the beginning 23mag is a fanzine designed by the local cyclists to publish stuff you don’t usually find in real mags; bmx jokes, crosswords, bmx romantic picture stories,... We published 6 issues from 1998 to 2002. This project was important to us and to finance its printing we would stoop to anything; phone harassment to bicycle retailers to sell them ad pages over priced, sale of bmx articles to the parisian specialized press, corruption of local politicians, prostitution...it became crazy

During summer 2000, I decided to find another mean of communication than ink and paper so I borrowed an HTML book from the library to learn how to create web pages. With an old Windows PC (300Mhz, a 3.2GB hard drive), Internet Explorer, Notepad to type in HTML code, free web hosting, I created the first pages. It was only the online fanzine at first. Then I gradually added various contents to the site (videos, magazines, etc). A few years later, I'm a rich man (not thanks to the site), the antiquated Windows PC has been replaced by a luxury Apple computer, a software is typing code for me, the web host provider, Anazys.com, is far better than the previous one and the site counts more than 9000 files in it.

Where do you find all this info to put on the site?
An obsessional neurosis leads me to collect any document related, sometimes even far, to BMX. Thus, I have a first reserve of information with the magazines, then I add stuff I take from the Internet. I try to quote as much as possible my sources

There are finally some comrades who help me. Some send me their productions or lend me their invaluable works and others fill the gaps on the site with missing information or take the time to share their memories. How much time and effort does compiling all this information take?
Of course it takes me a lot of time, but it's not a job, it's always interesting reading the magazines, searching the Internet to fill the gaps. I usually spend an hour a day working on the website.

What kind of personal gratification do you get out of putting all this info out there for others to see?
Being interviewed by Ride and getting some free magazines : )
II'm also proud of the 10,000 visitors per month, all the positive feedback and the chance to get in touch with some of the people who makes the BMX history. That’s far enough for me; this site is especially my payback to the bmx community for all it gives to me.

Do you consider yourself an old-school rider? Since I can't do a cherrypicker, I don’t consider myself old-school. I neither understand anything to modern riding so I’d say I’m a middle-school rider. I’m still interested in every period of bmx freestyle.

What does your girlfriend think of your hobby? Stupid, invading and useless child game. I love her, she’s the mum of my son.

How many magazines/videos do you actually have in your possession?
I'd say around 150 video tapes and 600 magazines. Too many for our flat, but not as many as I'd like to. I still spend a lot of time on ebay; if you don't know what to do with your old Freestylin, just let me know.

Do you have any goals for 23mag?
Actually, I'd like to add a little more stories. I'm sure it would be nice to have the visitors adding their own personal stories instead of a journalistic flow only. Everyone got stories related to bmx: a tv ad, a contest you did, a magazine you keep preciously, the bike you started with, the riders who led you to bmx, a video you watch over and over again. Don't hesitate, email me your stories of bmx history!
